About

Alto saxophonist Devin Daniels and baritone saxophonist Henry Solomon performed as a duo throughout the first half of LA's eventful 2025. VS., recorded over two sets in the half-timbered Harmony Room at Eagle Rock's St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, captures their third date, on the summer solstice. It's an urgent improvisation, at various moments pointillistic, atmospheric, and psychedelic. Both players use electronics to accentuate, accent, and extend their instruments without losing their voices or focus. Daniels drives with rapid, interrogative lines; Solomon anchors with grounded tones and harmonic support. Together they volley ideas and ring alarms. At just under 70 minutes, VS. contributes to the deep canon of experimental saxophone recordings with an expansive document of two jazz musicians listening closely and pushing each other somewhere new.
